About Us
Improving the Quality of Life in Detroit Since 1939
The Hudson-Webber Foundation is a private, independent grantmaking organization committed to improving the quality of life in Detroit. We support organizations and initiatives that build vibrant neighborhoods, center racial equity, and empower all Detroiters—new and long-standing—to thrive.
Our work is grounded in a long-term commitment to the city and informed by the evolving needs of its communities. We believe that strong neighborhoods are the foundation of Detroit’s prosperity, and we work across sectors to help remove structural barriers to opportunity, strengthen civic capacity, and foster innovative, inclusive growth.
With over eight decades of philanthropic leadership, we are focused on forward momentum—where equity is central, people are heard, places are energized, and progress is shared by all.
Our History
Founded in 1939, the Hudson-Webber Foundation has a long and distinguished history and played an essential role in shaping Detroit’s civic and economic future.
Years of Change
Detroit’s story is one of transformation, challenge, and resilience. From its postwar manufacturing heyday to periods of population decline and economic disinvestment, the city has mirrored national trends shaped by race, policy, and economics. The departure of industry and residents throughout the latter half of the 20th century led to growing inequity and deep structural barriers for many Detroiters—challenges that continue to inform the Foundation’s work today.
Detroit Resilience
Yet, Detroit’s identity has always been rooted in resilience. Home to labor movements, civil rights activism, and unmatched cultural contributions—from Motown to techno—Detroit has continually redefined itself through creativity, community action, and grit. The spirit of Detroiters remains at the heart of our mission and drives our commitment to inclusive progress.
The Road Ahead
Today, Detroit is experiencing a wave of revitalization, with growing investments and increased homeownership. However, progress is uneven, and longstanding disparities persist. At Hudson-Webber, we understand that a vibrant Detroit must be one where opportunity reaches every neighborhood and every resident. Our work is focused on ensuring that Detroit’s future is shared, sustainable, and centered in equity.
